Hot Honey Pizza
Hot Honey Pizza takes the classic up a notch by drizzling fiery and sweet honey over the top. It’s an unlikely combination that WORKS! Hot honey is delish over pepperoni pizza, a simple cheese, or more creative combos like goat cheese and prosciutto.

Why You’ll Love This Hot Honey Pepperoni Pizza Recipe
- Cheese + Honey = Bliss. If you’ve ever had honey on a cheese board, you know. And just like that drizzle of honey on a good sharp cheddar, honey on pizza is a revelation—especially when it’s hot honey. It adds heat and a sweet contrast to all that savory flavor.
- A Great Reason to Use Hot Honey. Maybe you’ve been putting off partaking in the hot honey trend because of the steep price on store-bought bottles. Well, you’re in luck! You can make your own hot honey for pizza with this easy Hot Honey Recipe, and you might even have all the ingredients you need already.
- Pizza Night Upgrade. Whether you make your own Whole Wheat Pizza Dough or keep it easy with storebought, adding hot honey to your usual pizza night makes pizza it extra special and fun.
How to Make Hot Honey Pizza
The Ingredients
- Pizza Dough. I use my Whole Wheat Pizza Dough, but you can use your own favorite recipe or store-bought.
- Pizza Sauce. Not marinara, friends! Pizza sauce is thicker than marinara and pasta sauces, which means your crust won’t get sad and soggy.
- Shredded Mozzarella Cheese. Store-bought shreds are okay, shredded from a block is better, but if you want a really epic cheese pull, shred it from a ball of fresh mozzarella.
- Pepperoni. The classic topping for hot honey pizza—but feel free to switch things up with your own favorite pizza toppings. Use cupping pepperoni for pepperoni that gets crispy on the edges.
- Hot Honey. The sweet and spicy condiment for our pizza pizzazz.
- Red Pepper Flakes. For extra heat.
- Fresh Basil. Optional, but it lends some fresh flavor and a pop of color to this hot honey pizza.
- More Optional Toppings. Goat cheese, red onion, and arugula are all excellent options.
The Directions
- Roll Out the Dough. You want a 12-inch circle.
- Top It. Add the sauce, followed by the mozzarella, and pepperoni. Add the goat cheese and red onion now too if you’re using it.
- Bake. Cook at 500 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the crust is golden and blistered. Drizzle with honey and any additional toppings. Slice and ENJOY!
My Favorite Salads for Serving With Pizza
Salad is always my favorite pairing with pizza, and each of these would go well with this hot honey pizza recipe.
- Arugula Salad. Keep it simple with this arugula salad. (It’s also delicious piled on top of the pizza!)
- Greek Salad. Greek salad with pizza? Yes, it works! The bold flavors and crisp, fresh texture of Greek salad makes it an excellent pairing.
- Antipasto Salad. This salad is full of big flavor.
- Italian Chopped Salad. If you want your hot honey pizza to serve 3 or 4, pair it with this filling chopped salad.
- Salad with Burrata. Burrata adds creaminess and richness to this salad.
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Let the Dough Rest If You Need To. If you’re caught in a stubborn cycle of stretching the dough and having it shrink back, take a break. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then try again. This will help relax the gluten so it’s not so snappy.
- Use a Pizza Stone If You Have One. You don’t need a pizza stone, but if you make pizza often, it’s worth the investment. It’s the best way to get a crisp crust.
- Don’t Slice the Pizza Right Away. If you do, the cheese will ooze off the slices. Let the pizza cool for a few minutes, then slice it. (I like to use a pizza rocker for slicing rather than a traditional rolling slicer. It’s the best way to get straight lines!)

Ingredients
- 1 ball Homemade Whole Wheat Pizza Dough or swap your favorite store-bought dough
- ½ cup pizza sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 12 slices pepperoni
- 1 tablespoon Hot Honey
- Pinch red pepper flakes
- Thinly sliced fresh basil optional
Optional Additional Toppings:
- ¼ cup crumbled goat cheese
- Thinly sliced red onion
- 1 to 2 handfuls fresh arugula
Instructions
- Position an oven rack in the upper third of your oven (4 to 5 inches from the top). Preheat the oven to 500°F (or as high as it will go). If using a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it preheats.
- On a lightly floured work surface, roll the dough into a 12-inch circle. If it shrinks back on you, let it rest for several minutes, then try again. Dough is stubborn like that sometimes.
- If cooking on a pizza stone: set a sheet of broiler-safe parchment paper on the back of a flat baking sheet (this is what I do). Transfer the dough to it (alternatively, you can transfer it to a cornmeal-dusted pizza peel). If you are not using a pizza stone, lightly dust a regular baking sheet with flour or cornmeal, then place the shaped dough directly in the center.
- Spread the dough with the pizza sauce, leaving a 3/4-inch border all the way around. Top evenly with the mozzarella, pepperoni slices, and goat cheese and red onion (if using).
- Carefully transfer the pizza to the stone, either by sliding the sheet of parchment with the pizza on it directly onto the stone, or quickly and carefully scooting it off of the pizza peel. (If cooking directly on a baking sheet, simply place the pizza in the oven.)
- Bake the hot honey pizza for 8 to 10 minutes, until the crust is golden and slightly blistered, rotating 180° halfway through.
- Transfer to a cutting board and drizzle with hot honey. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes, basil (if using), and arugula (if using). Let cool a few minutes, then slice and enjoy.
Notes
- TO STORE. Refrigerate pizza in an airtight storage container for up to 3 days.
- TO REHEAT. Rewarm leftovers on a baking sheet in the oven at 450 degrees F.
- TO FREEZE. Freeze pizza in an airtight freezer-safe storage container for up to 3 months. Reheat from frozen as directed.
